What is it like being a teenager today? Here are some words that have been used to describe the teenage experience – Bewildering, Chaotic, Tiring, Mind-boggling, Conflicting, Contradictory, Complicated, Intense, Daunting, Stressful, Uncertain, Pressurised, Competitive, Rushed, Confusing, Materialistic, Scrutinized, Bitter-sweet, Overwhelming.
Why is being a teenager so difficult and why are the adolescent years such a challenge to navigate at times? We automatically jump to blame the avalanche of hormones that start to hit us when puberty begins but hormones are literally only the tip of the iceberg. There is much more going on than initially meets the eye. Brain development, bodily development, identity development and finding your place within society, all in the limbo that is adolescence – a teenager is caught between childhood and adulthood with a wide variety of expectations and limitations still at play.
The world is unfortunately a much more frightening place nowadays compared to 15/20 years ago. When I was in my teens, the only time I was faced with fear-inducing global issues or news was on the tv, radio or newpapers, all of which could be easily avoided if necessary. With the rise of mass media, social/global issues are now local issues and we are consistently bombarded with terrifying and almost apocalyptic messages about the state of the world we live in, at every turn. It is nearly impossible to avoid the fear ridden messages being pumped out by the media on a daily basis. With the rise of social media, everything we do is scrutinised and judged by whoever we are connected with. The pressure and fear that teenagers experience now, compared to 20 years ago, is monumental. It is no wonder teen mental health issues are on the rise and yet support is not easy to find.
All of these factors, along with the demands of peers, society and culture can cause a huge amount mental health issues such as anxiety, stress and in more extreme cases, depression. Teenagers can find it a challenge to verbalise what they’re going through and parents can struggle to understand, we get lost in a sea of emotions and can feel like we are drifting further and further apart. What we are looking for most of all is to feel connected, accepted, listened to, understood, supported and loved by the people around us.

I also provide added support for parents of teens – I can help to bridge the gap in your relationship and strengthen your understanding and connection.
All my Coaching Sessions take place online via Zoom. Parental or guardian consent will be required for under 18’s.
